Flickr isn't letting me upload any new photos right now (is anyone else having this problem?). I scrolled through my photostream looking for old photos that never made it on the blog. I didn't even get passed the first page when I saw this set. I took these photos during hair and make-up before one of our shows. I like the 'beauty' aspect of them. I need to put together a shoot with a 'make-up' aspect. If I can just find the right furniture...

Everything in my life is topsy turvey right now. More on that later though. These are not the sort of photos to accompany that kind of post. Oh, and what is with two blogs (one of which, Quintessentially Quirky is a personal favorite) shutting down in the last week? No fun! I'll miss you Tess! At least there is still twitter ;).

A little over a year ago, I visited the Mormon Temple in Maryland with my best friend Katie and her husband Brendon, also a good friend. We wandered all around looking at the shiny, fairy lights and enjoying the Christmas feel. I never posted pictures and I thought that today would be a good day to do that because today is KATIE'S BIRTHDAY! So, these lights are no longer Christmas lights to me--now they decorate my blog in honor of her BIRTHDAY! HOORAY!

I love you Katie and wish you the very best. As you know, I have no internet so this post will have to make do because I have no way to skype you or facebook you! HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Also, I'm hosting a giveaway over here! It closes on Christmas!

*While I travel around London and Paris with my darling parents, I have pre-set some posts to run so that I can show you all my London adventures I have yet to blog about! I'll be back in the New Year.

I have always been a guy's girl. Not due to any sort of tomboy ways (at least not in the past decade) but because I have always had a boyfriend. I have never had a large group of female friends nor really felt a desire for one. But spending an evening out with a great group of women, exchanging secret Santa gifts, laughing, sharing stories of our adventures and misadventures abroad changed my mine. Perhaps because I've been reading The Girl Who Married A Bear or perhaps just because I'm growing up--I'm starting to believe in the power behind a group of women. I'm starting to believe in the creativity that can grow and the sense of home and acceptance that can develop. I'm not articulating what I mean very well. Oh well, I will have to think on it further and get back to you, or just to me.

I have determined that it is not just important for me to have a good outfit but for me to have photos I like. I really like these photos. I love looking like I'm fading away or walking into a dream world. This outfit is a bit of a contradiction... a button up with a lace-like white skirt. I love the light colors but I'm going to be taking this outfit into lighter territory soon. I love when last weeks outfit inspire this weeks outfit!

shirt: american eagle, thrifted (1$)
belt: thrifted
skirt: thrifted
bow: thrifted
necklace: gift (see more below)
ballet flats: target

Birthday Necklace
This necklace is a gift from my friend Katie, KTPink of Robutton, and is fantastic! She made this for me and I love it to death. I haven't had anyone make me jewelery since elementary school and then the pieces were not nearly as beautiful and personal as this necklace. Katie creates jewelery, designs and sews clothing ranging from t-shirts to wedding gowns, and fabricates bags! I've gushed about her as a person before (and I'll say it again, she's the sweetest) but now I'm gushing about her talent as a designer and creator of magical things.
Birthday Necklace
Katie has promised to host a give-away for me soon but it's all based on the number of followers sixbeforebreakfast has. If you're a hidden follower I urge you to follow either via bloglovin or blogger so I can convince Katie to create a piece of magic for you!

beauty in imperfections

This Monday, I received an email informing me I had won Delightfully-Tacky's giveaway. I was excited to pick a piece of jewelery from Kdikio Vintage. I think I won because I needed something to look forward to this week.
Today my little package arrived! It was wrapped so adorably!

I agonized over choosing just one piece until I saw these little spectacles!
I knew instantly that they had to be mine!

I added them to my pile of necklaces
&& am hoping these 'Wiley Brains' will help me on my math midterm.

Thanks Kristen and Elizabeth!

I knew Katie and I were going to be friends from the first day I saw her in class. Her hair was purple then; she had the most beautiful sleeve I'd ever seen AND she had multiple piercings (including the industrial and a micro-dermal). She was and is my body-mod idol.

Now her hair is pretty pink (for the life of my I can't decide which color I like better) and we have become good friends in the past few months. I realize now that she is the first close girlfriend I've had since my freshman year here.

I'd forgotten how nice it is to be able to sit and talk for hours and hours (which we've done). Katie and I are very different people. I am high strung and melodramatic and she is so calming and kind that she makes every tense situation feel better and more manageable.

This semester I only get to see her for an hour on Mondays; let me tell you, I look forward to those Mondays.

The point of this post besides getting all gushy, is to say that while I love Katie... if there was a magic spell that enabled me to switch souls with her and become as sweet and creatively talented as her I would do it in a heartbeat.

Katie sews almost all of her clothing and in the next few years will be opening her own store! I urge you to watch her here and wait for her to start selling (and updating more; I'm putting the pressure on Katie!)

Oh, she made this super sick spiderweb dress. Jealous!

(on me: thrifted shirt and belt, target skirt, hue tights,
hand-me-down leg warmers, thrifted boots [of awesome]).

if only i had claws. growl.

Everything is thrifted
except the jeans (forever 21) and belt (old navy, a million yrs ago)!

This outfit was inspired heavily by Already Pretty's post "Wear Everything All the Time." I bought this faux fur coat in August and it has been hanging in my dorm (looking ever so lovely) ever since. I know fur is very cool and that's probably why I never wore it. I like it a lot but I feel like it is such a STATEMENT. I don't go to clubs anymore or really any place where one would wear a slinky dress so I felt like I didn't have a place to wear my fur. However, I decided to just do it!

Taking Sal (from Already Pretty)'s advice I combined my statement piece with a simple outfit: a cashmere sweater layered over a plaid button up, casual skinny jeans, and my new, very comfy, boots. I felt comfy, stylist, and warm!

I recommend wearing your favorite pieces! Thanks Sal.

new links

Hello,

Just letting you know that I've updated the list of links to the left! I've added new fashionistas to Well Dressed and a couple new photographers to Well Shot.

If you stumble across a blog you'd think I'd enjoy please link me!

Thanks,

Sarah Yvonne

and everything was backwards

Every once and awhile I read something that makes absolute sense!
Does this ever happen to you? It should.
The other day I was reading Barbro Anderson and she commented on how she loved to wear things backwards.
*LIGHTBULB*
It may seem obvious to some, but for some reason, until I read Barbro's words it never sounded good to me.

This is how I wore this shirt:

This is normally the front:

I love, LOVE the lace in the front and the higher collar; it feels very Victorian and romantic.
I will definitely be wearing it like this from now on.
The complete outfit:

sunglasses: forever 21, probably
shirt: forever 21
pants: i have no clue, but they are PURPLE
boots: thrifted (suede, totally impractical for a walk in the snow.)

Oh, that's a cigar that I'm holding for Boyfriend while he takes photographs.

this is what i want to do

via letters to dead people.

it's my new obsession.

update: found another one

Monday, January 18

i strongly urge you to read

Le Quantraille's post on where our clothing comes from. It really makes you think---whose economy would you rather be supporting?

Friday, January 8

today i read through all the archives of:

New Dress A Day: A blog about a woman who gave herself a budget of $365 and the task to buy only thrift store clothing for one year. She does some amazing alterations and makes me want to learn to sew.

Kennedy Holmes: A living in Boston GRITS (Girl Raised in the South), who thrifts a lot and puts together super amazingly adorable outfits. Her roommate and friend...

Caroline Wilson
: takes amazing photos of Kennedy and others. I love both Caroline and Kennedy's hair. (They are making it hard for me to convince myself to cut mine).

Other things I love right now:

Nine: the now-in-theaters musical about Italy! Boyfriend and I went a couple nights ago and I fell in love. I've been singing "be Italian" ever since. It is similar to the style of the movie-musical Chicago. I highly recommend everyone see it!

Reading: I have read a million books over winter break. My favorites: The Jane Austin Club, A Walk in the Woods, The Book Thief, A Girls Guide to Hunting and Fishing, and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (it may be a little premature to name this as a favorite since I just started it). I also re-read a whole bunch of Tamora Pierce books (a favorite author of mine from my childhood). I'm taking Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies and a book about the misuses of history back to school.

Thrifting: I scored the most perfect grandpa sweater this past week! I also found a ballet-esque party dress, a blue sweater, the most ugly shoes in the world, and a brown purse.

I'm ready to go back to school because I'm tired of living out of a suitcase. I'm also ready for my own space again. This weekend is going to be super busy. Boyfriend and I are driving back to school tomorrow (assuming I finish packing) then driving to MD to celebrate the birth of my lovely friend, Katie. Sunday I will be back in MD for lunch and piercings! Hopefully I will find time to go get my hiking boots. I'm finally taking the plunge and investing in a pair.

I hope you have a splendiforous weekend. That means good. :-)

"happiness is a choice"

I have some fairly wise friends in my life right now. Yesterday, during a car ride, one of them mentioned that people should choose to be content more. Yes we should, we should be content; but more than that we should be HAPPY! Big smile, laughs that make your abs hurt, hugging your friends, happy!! (and if we're not happy we should make the changes needed to be happy.)
Here's why I'm happy:

1. My polaroid camera takes lovely colored photos.
2. Disney playlist on Pandora, every song elicits and "omg. squee!"
3. This article from Kingdom of Style. I would gladly steal every tutu dress!
4. Leftovers. yummy.
5. Blowing kisses to cute boys cross the library ;) (don't worry, I'm talking about you Boyfriend).
6. No finals on Monday!
7. Getting comments on my posts & new followers :D (nothing makes me smile more!)
8. Oh, only one more week in the semester!!!!
9. Facebook chats with friends in other states (hey there Maryland & Rhode Island)
10. did i mention disney? i just finished (quietly) singing along to Gaston from Beauty and The Beast!!)

Why are you happy?

zomg.omg.squee

Since my initial foray into the fashion blogging world I have been saddened by the lack of D.C. fashion blogs. There were blogs that talked about fashion in general or how unfashionable D.C. is, but no one was writing about their personal fashion.

It seems my wait is over. I would like to introduce you to the lovely E (from what I can tell this is what she goes by online) of District of Chic. Go check her out and say hello!

P.S. I'm trying to cut back to one post a day, at least during hell weeks, but I had to post about this immediately!

Supersonic Rocket Ship

(dress: forever 21; blouse: thrifted; tights: unknown?; boots: payless; purse: loehmann's)

I rarely change my jewelery, since I did today I thought I'd take detail shot. The silver band on the left was a gift from Boyfriend; it was purchased at an antique mall. The snake was a Christmas gift from my parents; purchased at U.O. The far right was a gift from an old friend; purchased at Tiffany's (the one and only piece I own from there).

I no longer work in an office (phew) but if I still did I totally would wear this! I was heavily, heavily influenced by Kansas Couture who I just discovered yesterday. I felt very feminine all day; especially with these little heeled booties!
I finished my halloween costume last night && I'm so excited to wear it!
On halloween I'm doing a post on halloween costumes of my previous years at college (yikes) so take a few minutes to come back then!

Happy Friday kittens!

semi-pro

This outfit was inspired by Already Pretty. Sally always uses such unique layering techniques and I finally worked up the nerve to try some layering of my own.

(dress: victoria's secret, white blouse: unknown it's been in my closet for years and never been worn, belt: thrifted, tights: target, shoes: payless.)

This big grin also inspired by Sally!

oooh, look at the texture!

I wore this to the White House on Saturday; unfortunately President Obama was in Pittsburgh for the G20 summit. Still, it was a fun trip.

Update: photos are so lame because Boyfriend is sick so I took these with self-timer while he napped.
