These pants are the most wonderful things I've ever purchased. Ever. On Saturday I wore them to work with a monochromatic look and fabulous little heels. Sunday I wore them with a thrifted cardigan, mocs and spent the day watching Lord of the Rings with a huge group of loves from college. So glad I finally saw the third film. More glad that I own these comfy things.

one girl, two bows, three colors

Today's ensemble is super impressive for me because of two reasons: a) my hair is in a bow and since I normally wear my hair in three specific ways (pony tail, bun, low ponytail/bun) this shows a huge improvement in my hair-skill; b) my first voyage into colorblocking proper! Light pink cardigan (purchased in Oslo), salmon/orange blouse (hand-me-down from my roommate), and red jeans ($5 at wet seal like three years ago). It was a pretty gray day in my part of the East Coast and I felt like a little ray of sunshine as I ran my errands and went to work.

Before work I went to the library and picked up the book "French Women Don't Get Fat: The Secret of Eating For Pleasure" by Mireille Guliano. Now, I know (most days) that I'm not fat but I do have huge (understatement) guilt issues associated with eating... food...of any kind. The issues have gotten a lot better as I've grown more comfortable with being me and being my size and loving my body no matter what. However, I believe there is always room for more knowledge and for more understanding--and of more recipes, of which this book has tons. I'm only on chapter three but I'm already hooked and seeing Mireille's food perspective as a healthy alternative to the beating-myself-up-over-eating-a-chocolate-bar way of life I've led. Also, any woman who agrees that a glass of red should be served with lunch has the right idea in my book.

My boss passed this sweater on to me about a month ago and I swear I've worn it a dozen times, never photographed and only ever backwards! I love the color and I especially love the buttons up the back. The skirt is also passed down to me from the same boss and it is lovely and swirly and chiffonish. Perfect.

I spent my commute today reading through my gardening book trying to figure out what I am going to plant this summer. I'm thinking beans, tomatoes, peppers (at least one), spinach (several batches), and maybe some herbs indoors. I would like to grow some edible flowers as well as marigolds. I searched through my flickr archive and found a few photos from last years garden. I didn't do much research before planting my few tomato plants but I still harvested throughout the summer and into fall. Hopefully with careful planning this year my balcony garden will be even more bountiful!

Today was such a LONG day. Eight hours with no break makes Sarah a tired girl. I pulled this outfit together last night at like midnight after getting back from a whirlwind trip to Richmond at like 11:15pm. The need for sleep made me shun my new "sink or swim" color plan and I went to the basic gray. But the stripes and the polkadots made me feel like I was still having some fun with my outfit! I'm unsure whether I'm going to hold onto this dress for much longer. The cut seems a bit juvenile on me--I feel very babydoll in it.

Although, looking through my archives, I do see that it serves as a good layering piece. Also, belts help a lot! I guess I'll hold onto it for a bit longer... I just realized that both the dress and the shirt underneath are from high school! I hold onto my clothes forever :)! The tights are newish but the have huge runs in them. See them? No you don't because I layered black tights underneath and now I've solved the problem of these tights! Hoorah!

When I moved into my little apartment there were several things left--a couch, a chair, several lamps, actually most of my furniture AND these jeans. Super awesome bell bottoms. So soft and so bell like. The bells inspired me to do a super seventies inspired outfit. Fun stripes and a fur vest. I've had this striped shirt since high school and halfway through my day at work I noticed a hole at the elbow of it. Ahh so shabby. Oh well.

&& if you're going to channel the seventies, you gotta throw in some peace&love.

Oops on the awkward faces in every single photo. I also realized that the (mostly) full body shots are not accurately focused. That's what I get for trying to quickly take outfit photos 5 minutes before I need to run out the door for work. Also I've been taking the photos with my camera balanced on a book on my bed because I left my tripod in the car. It's a delicate operation, let me tell you.

I really should have ironed this dress last night. I spent a few hours playing in my closet trying to come up with fun and colorful outfits and this was one of them! Pink and blue and orange and a really wrinkly beige! About halfway through my day I got to thinking that I had one thing too many: three bright colors, a collage of flower pins, ruffles, and lace tights? Then I went to dinner with my parents and my mom says she loved it and all was right with the world again.

I love these colors together! The light pink, the beautiful blue, the muted orange. They combine so well--surprise. Day two in a row for my big puffy flower pin; today I added two flower hairclips for a new look.

I love that for main components of this outfit were FREE! Both the sweater (an ann taylor factory piece) and the dress-cum-skirt (h&m garden collection) were swapped for and the belt was a secret santa present from a friend in England. There is an inch or so of snow on the ground today--our first snow of winter. It was rather pathetic--mostly lots of slush and ice. I decided that on such a gray/cold day I needed something BRIGHT to make an afternoon at work manageable. Cue: the blue sweater and floral sundress. I added the flower pin (from Michael's. Win.) to cover a small stain on the sweater and to add a third flower piece to my themed look.

Warm leather boots, two pairs of tights, and thigh highs made my walk to and from the metro totally comfortable! At work today I invented a super fun colorblock game to help me figure out ways to use my closet to colorblock successfully. I now have a list of ten or so outfits that are totally colorblocked. I'm stuck on what shoes to wear though. Most of my colored shoes are heels/flats and all I want to wear are these boots... Does it break colorblock to just wear brown or black shoes?

About a week before Christmas a few of my college girlfriends and I kidnapped each other and took a bus to the Big City for the day. It was an amazing day--my first trip up in almost 3 years. We lost one of our group to a migraine the second we landed (missed you Emily). After checking Emily into a hotel room Ada, Shorne, and I ran off to a huge lunch at The Stage. We then rolled ourselves to Central Park for an afternoon of wandering. It was my first time in the park and ohmygosh it was beautiful. I can't decide whether I like the cityscape through the trees or the pond more. Ah. To live in the city--a dream.

Also, the best way to stay warm in the cold is a floor length dress with fur lined boots and two pairs of leggings and legwarmers underneath! This dress is one of my favorite thrift store purchases. Love.

sink or swim: the hot pink edition

I scooped up this dress at the swap this summer because HOLY EYELIDS it's bright pink. It's a size 12 and 100% silk and I love the pink. I've decided I love color and I'm determined to wear them more and more and all the time. I've adopted a sink or swim mentality in my quest to be more colorful. I put on colors and then I leave the house so I can't change. Also, I put on a lot of colors at once. Today, instead of pairing this hot pink dress with a soft gray or a neutral tan I decided that mustard yellow would probably work best.

A nice leopard belt to bring the skirt in and a pair of pink leather loafers from the thrift store. The tights are from Tarjet. I love love the huge dolman sleeves that are created when I belt it high and let all the excess fabric just drape. Maybe one day i'll alter it but for now I'm enjoying the drape affect!

I wore this highlighter of an outfit to play pool with the women of my family. I really suck at pool. I'm really awesome at wearing super bright colors. I love that most of this outfit was free! The dress and jacket are from a swap I went to this summer. The belt, pin, and bouse were thrifted (probably no more than $6 for the two). The shoes are from h.s. and who knows where the leggings/socks are from. Awesome and super thrifty. I like colors a lot right now. Also, I like my ever growing collection of shoes that are impractical for my current employment situation. They sit on my window shelf and taunt me with their prettiness.

Now that I'm finally using pinterest (thanks Katie) I am obsessed with cycling through my favorite bloggers archives and pinning ideas for outfits. This outfit is a combination of Kendi's look here and the fact that it was freakishly warm in D.C. today. Nearly 60* in mid-January? This winter's weather is totally wild. The last time I wore these pants I really thought I was packing them up until Spring. I'm glad I was wrong because I love love the color.

Anyway, I had the intention of getting up on my roof and taking photos since I actually got home before the sun set. But then I got a call from a friend and before I knew it the sun was long gone. I really liked the outfit so I snapped some photos in my dinning room while my roommate told me stories of a tunnel built by a guy in Italy based on visions he remembers from his childhood.

I love my weird work schedule because I have weekends randomly throughout the week. My favorite days off are Mondays and Tuesdays because then Boyfriend is off to and we can advent! The week before the week before Christmas we ran all sorts of errands for last minute gifts and ended up at my favorite second hand book store (Hole in the Wall Books). The other night I couldn't sleep so I started planning outfits in my head and this is what emerged. Cashmere rolled up and tucked with a rubber band, an oversized silk blouse, and an asymmetrical dress. I love the unusual layers and how even though everything is a smidge to big it still looks good on.

I'm staring oh so lovingly at this present even though I wrapped it for the boyfriend. I find that this year it's so hard to maintain Christmas spirit. I have a tree with lights, decorations around the apartment, a stack of presents under the tree, and Christmas music playing all day long at work. Even so I don't feel like it's Christmas at all.

Told you I was obsessed with this green dress. With a belt it actually isn't that bad. I threw this on before meeting my girl Katie at the Kennedy Center to see the Nutcracker! It was a remake and, even though I've seen the Nutcracker every year forever and ever, I was so entertained and engaged. This performance was much funnier than ones before and I was glad to have had a chance to see it (thanks Grandmother!).

Don't be fooled by all the smiles and laughter in the above photos. The combination of the world's worst hangover (thanks company party) and the unicorn-uterus-syndrome had me feeling like:

I am obsessed with this dress even though it is not super flattering on me. In my head there is nothing more perfect than a green velvet dress on a rainy afternoon spent with the love of my life. I guess the fact that I remember this day as wonderful and beautiful and full of love and laughter actually makes this dress pretty damn flattering--to my life.

We put the Christmas lights on our tree tonight. Before we wrapped the second string around the top half I just had to play with them. I didn't get home from work till after dark and I really wanted a photo of this outfit. Structurally it's very unconventional but I just love the colors. The wine-colored skirt and socks with the navy blue blouse made me happy all day. I also enjoyed the silk on top and bottom.

An outfit from awhile back but I wanted to split up the pants posts--seriously, i'm hooked on trousers! I wore this outfit a few weeks ago, which was just a few weeks after I started my new job. When I put this together and looked in the mirror I felt like me! I hadn't in a long time. This realization completely validated my decision to leave my old company.

The skirt/dress is Jean Paul Gaultier for Target. I scored it for $7 at the end of the season and wore it for my 21st birthday. I almost like it more as a skirt! The shirt was my mom's. The boots are new from Steve Madden (to replace the pair I had to abandon in Paris last Christmas). Camden Market leather jacket--same as the last post. Gosh, best purchase I made in England, hands down.

I brought a ton of laundry to the manfriend's house on Monday (free laundry helllllllyes). Before we left, he asked me if I had packed anything to wear Tuesday/Wednesday (sleepovers) and I scoffed, looked at my bags (actually one giant box and one pink tub), and said of course. Cue me getting dressed Wednesday morning and realizing I actually had nothing to wear....

This outfit was made up last minute and probably more suited for April than November (the pants definitely as I purchased them from the Gap this past spring) . My ankles were freezing every time I stepped outside. Also, unlike Jentine (of My Edit) who shaves the bottom three inches of her leg before wearing cropped pants, I did not shave because I did not pack a razor. Always classy friends, always.

I don't normally mind black and brown but for some reason wearing my black leather jacket (Camden Market) with the brown pleather belt (old navy, 10 yrs ago) and the shades-of-brown-bag (thrift) bothered me all day--didn't pack a different coat though so oh well! This lace blouse (thrift) is something I need to play more with because I've only worn it a few times since I purchased it a year or so ago.

Oh hello, I've decided to blog again. && I'm back in an outfit that blows my mind because OMGPANTZ. My comfort zone is skirts, long skirts, dresses, shorter skirts, tights, layered dresses, and leather. If i'm wearing pants I'm wearing jeans or your basic black trousers (and ponte pants--I'm obsessed with ponte as a material). However, in the past few years I've accumulated (via thrift, etc) a rather large collection of cropped ankle trousers.

I decided to start my trouser debut with a very basic look. Silk blouse (Ann Taylor), trousers (Ann Taylor), sparkle jewels (F21 and White House Black Market) and boots (uh...?). Unfortunately, I had planned to wear different pants so I ironed these and then changed and didn't iron these so, mind the wrinkles! I think I want to tighten all these cropped trousers so they fit more snuggly around my ankles but who knows when that will get done; until then I will wear trousers all nice and loose-like.

Do you see how straight my part is? Magic.

It's good to be back. & Boyfriend graciously returned to his "photographer" position.

[edit: haha, I have worn my cropped trousers before! I wore them to my first post-grad job interview. I got the job, was promoted, moved to another company and discovered that my "fun summer job" had career potential. Great pants :D]

I turned 22 on May 31st. Two weeks later I hosted my first high tea. It was fantastic. I had three types of tea (raspberry, english, and irish breakfast teas). I served B.L.Ts, avocado and cream cheese sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly mini-sandwiches, and Italian chicken subs--everything was mini! I also had scones (made by my friend/future sister-in-law Kirsten), and pasta salad! For dessert there was rainbow cake made by me and decorated by Kirsten--without whom there would have been no party. Seriously, she kept me calm, helped prep food, decorated my cake, and generally rocked my socks off!

Stay tuned for photos of my fantastic, wonderful, amazing, beautiful, stylish friends! Everyone came, everyone dressed well, everyone stayed, everyone brought liquor ;). I love my friends more so very much!

This might be my favorite outfit that I've worn recently. I've had to be fairly conservative (boring) while dressing for my two jobs so anytime I take a day off I sometimes go a little crazy with the clothing choices! However, I think my conservative day jobs are influencing my personal aesthetic. This dress is very simple--clean lines, soft colour--but still fun with the frills and the bow. Throwing a vest on top makes it more appropriate for a day spent looking for comfy and stylish shoes (no go so far) and eating pizza with my man. Two articles of clothing, one pair of shoes, and one giant cocktail ring and there is a stylish outfit that still beats the heat!

Oh, and everything tastes better when you drink it out of a mason jar. Especially 12$ jug 'o wine.

Summer is passing by so quickly, in a stream of days 100 degrees and higher. I sweat when I walk to work, I sweat while waiting for the bus, I sweat underground, and I sweat while I walk home. Although, I love walking home. If the sun is up I sip my water and take my time, turning the pages of my book. If the sun is down, I walk slowly and admire the houses and dream of living in my own. With a puppy curled at my feet, a cat on my lap, and a huge kitchen with homemade pizza and baked goods.

In the meantime (the time between renting and owning; living paycheck to paycheck and having savings), I work with clothes all the time. I am also playing with make-up! I haven't really worn make-up since high school but now I'm really getting into it. A little blush, some shadowing under the cheekbones, blue eyeliner! It's kind of fun. Also, newsprint nails! It took several hours to do them properly but I received tons of compliments.

We also eat dinner on the roof. Ada, Joel, Boyfriend and i. We sit up there and watch the sunset and eat food, drink wine, and laugh. It's good to have good company. It's good to live in a beautiful place. It's good with beautiful people.

The blue dress was my mom's. White lapels, white buttons, white flower. Perfection!

Oslo to me will always be a rainy fall day. A red painted flower shop across the street from a warm coffee and sandwich place where we sat until we could feel our toes again. There was a hotel room at the end of the line filled with efficient Scandinavian furniture and a beautiful urban sunset. At night we took the tram to the city and walked until we found a pizza place that had take out. Lit by streetlamps and the moon, I felt safe there. On our last day we went to a sculpture park that had a gold-lined path to Narnia and a skyscape that would make an atheist believe in god.

Oh Oslo, I will remember you as you were and will be; not as you are now--damaged and bleeding because of the destructive actions of a man whose mind is twisted by hate and whose eyes are blind to beauty. Oslo, I will remember you.

I got home from a day of hanging with family (breakfast with Boyfriend, an afternoon at my Grandmother's, and dinner with the parents) with this incredible need for change! I spent an hour or so moving furniture around the apartment. The couch, the desk, the chairs are all rearranged and it looks really good! Ada and I have much more to do (we are getting a craft table, moving one big piece of antique furniture, creating art to hang) but these changes were really big and feel good.

I knew that we were going to be changing the apartment a lot so at the beginning of the summer I decided to photograph some of my favorite parts of the apartment!

1. Pretty dresses that used to hang on my wall.

2. Jewelry and miscellany that sits on my windowsill.

3. My favorite bookshelf in my bedroom. Filled with my prettiest books, shoes, and part of my camera collection.

4. My mom's blue glass head and the top hat Boyfriend gifted me our first Christmas together.

5. The dining room with fresh flowers and homemade scones.

Looking for: the girl I used to be.

Now I'm grown-grown-gone. Working, paying bills, cooking meals, cleaning (haha). Steady, steady. I wear a pencil skirt, sensible shoes, and blouses seven days a week. My paycheck goes to verizon and harris teeter. I eat my vegetables. In bed before the clock strikes twelve and my carriage is parked before it returns to pumpkin-state.

I used to wear tutus. I danced until two and skipped class to sleep in. Coffee at noon and an afternoon of woods-walking, photo-taking, and Boyfriend-kissing. What happened to the fairy who sat on my shoulder and whispered wicked things that curled in my brain and drove me mad? No more sharp toys, no more chasing chaos, no more hangover-inducing all night parties where everyone curls up as the sun rises.

Where is the wild self-destructive glee in this grown up world?

Lately, I've been stressed. Grinding-teeth-in-sleep, migraine-inducing, snapping-at-Boyfriend stressed. Retail brings with it an annoying pressure, first thing every day you're instructed on how your numbers need improving. It's frustrating because the job isn't actually important and yet it's stressful. What do I want to do in my life? How do I go about getting there? Who am I now? My internship is wonderful, glorious, invigorating! I wish I had more time to dedicate to it. But retail takes up five days a week. I wish I hadn't rushed into this job so quickly. But money-stress, bill-stress, independence-stress cause me to jump, JUMP into the first job I found, without taking a chance to truly think about what I needed--financially and for myself (growth, mental health, etc.)

The last time I relaxed was in mid-May. Not to long ago on the calender but it feels like years ago. Trapped in a cycle of work, work, work--seven days a week--individual days drag on but time flies. I miss this little cabin in the woods. The hot tub, the whiskey with friends, the peace of being surrounded by green and growth and silence.

I'm throwing a tea party Saturday. Cake-stress, sandwich-stress, number-of-available-chairs-stress.

I graduated from Marymount University with a Bachelor's in History.

Surrounded by family (mine and Boyfriend's) and with a smile so big it nearly split my face in two, I walked across the stage at the D.A.R. Constitution Hall and collected my diploma. Four years after beginning college as a purple-haired sociology major, I'm finished and ready for the next chapter in my life.

The balcony garden is going well. Hopefully I will have some fruits on these tomato plants soon. And some buds on my flowers. I may have planted things late in the season. Oh well. I love the smell of green in the morning. Luckily, the A.C. doesn't work so I'm forced to keep the windows open all the time and, I swear, I can smell summer coming!

Ramblin' Roads

This past weekend Boyfriend and I hit the road! We drove down to Front Royal, Va to spend the weekend hot tubbin' and drinkin' with some good friends and some new friends! I decided to dress with a vintage twist for the drive down and our afternoon in town. We hit up several used bookstores, a gun store, and a two thrift stores! I purchased several vintage patterns and a pair of yellow pants I hope to soon convert into capris! My roommate left me her sewing machine (rather than throw it out). I have so many projects waiting for me to learn to use it and get thread!

I bought this hat from Kennedy Holmes. It was listed as a bowler but when it got to me it was clear it was a fedora. The hat naturally caved into the shape of a fedora. I decided that I loved the red too much and have determined that I will wear it as a bowler anyway! I can't decided if I am a hat person. I'm slowly been acquiring them but I don't ever feel right in them. I'm hoping it's like learning to walk in heels--it just takes practice!

R.I.P. these sandals. They broke right before I took these pictures. :( Six years of service to me and a long life before that with a friend from high school.

My current roommate is on her way out. Literally, everything is gone but the bed frame. The kitchen has been emptied (by half), the hall closet is bare, her door is empty of crayon drawings (from kids she babysits), and the living light is gone. Last week I graduated--no more Marymount for me. I no longer identify as a college student. I work a job now that will have to pay rent, electric, wireless, and food. Everything is different.

So today, we need calm.

I'm in state of constant flux. I bounce between "freedom! freedom! time to focus on photography and cooking and vintage selling and the future" and "i'm frozen! how do I deal when all my structure has vanished with the delivery of a diploma." I'm in a post-graduation funk. Hopefully I will kick my way out of it soon. I'm focusing on kicking ass in sales, editing photos, growing tomatoes, and cleaning my room.

Flickr isn't letting me upload any new photos right now (is anyone else having this problem?). I scrolled through my photostream looking for old photos that never made it on the blog. I didn't even get passed the first page when I saw this set. I took these photos during hair and make-up before one of our shows. I like the 'beauty' aspect of them. I need to put together a shoot with a 'make-up' aspect. If I can just find the right furniture...

Everything in my life is topsy turvey right now. More on that later though. These are not the sort of photos to accompany that kind of post. Oh, and what is with two blogs (one of which, Quintessentially Quirky is a personal favorite) shutting down in the last week? No fun! I'll miss you Tess! At least there is still twitter ;).

Still sick. Last week we went out to celebrate my gurl Yaritza's birthday. She wore a headdress and moccasins (photos to come). I wore fancy dress and was still blond. Boyfriend was actually awake and alive and came with us! Too many margaritas were drank and one way to squicky vodka&tonic. Photos were taken while underground and at the second bar. The boys threw darts and I sat around and pouted (do to too many margaritas and too little to entertain myself with). After saying farewell to the birthday girl, Boyfriend and I came home and drank screwdrivers on the couch and cuddled. I can't decided which part of the evening was more fun.

I have eight million photos to edit. Some from graduation, miscellaneous, etc.c Tomorrow, Boyfriend and I are headed into the woods for a cabin-ganza weekend to celebrate our dear friend Emily's birthday! && I'm celebrating graduation. I made two dozen cupcakes this morning. Now I really need to go pack. I've been outfit planning all day.

I'm sick, sick, sick right now. My throat is sore and my head has been pounding all day. I slept about 20 hours and spent the rest watching criminal minds and SVU. Anyway I don't really feel like staying up any longer. I took today off of work (an eight hour shift :/) but I have to work tomorrow. I have lots of ideas bouncing around in my head about treats and dinners to make. This Thursday, Boyfriend and I are headed into the woods to celebrate a friends birthday. I want to make some cupcakes. Tomorrow morning, if I feel up to it, I'm going to make some crepes--I don't have any nutella but I do have bananas.

Wow. I ended up writing much more than I'd planned. I wore this color to visit Katie in the hospital after the birth of her beautiful daughter Cordelia. I have like 300 photos to edit. She is the most beautiful baby I've ever seen.

During dress rehearsal, we models had the opportunity to watch the opening scene. I was blown away with Devon, the ringleader, and the effect of the lighting! The girls are supposed to be sort of dark fairies and when the ringleader finishes his introduction they do this really cool dance! I love the opening scene and I really think it set the tone for the show.

I asked Katie to take a photo of me and my hair the first night of the fashion show. I liked the 'drag queen' quality of the well done hair, heavy make-up, and leather jacket. We walked into the hall and both suggested that the photo be in front of the mannequins. It's cool to be creatively in-tune with a friend. Love you Katie!

grapefruit, whole wheat english muffin with laughing cow swiss cheese and blackberry jam, orange juice, and coffee.

fiber one cereal with banana, mini cinnamon raisin bagels with peanut butter, orange juice, and daily vitamins (daily vit., fish oil, vit. D).

Lunch:

homemade tortilla, turkey, cheese, avocado, salsa on the side, and strawberry banana smoothie.

Dinner:

frozen pizza with added tomatoes, onions, and peppers, brass monkey.

I started my job at a small boutique chain clothing store. I had forgotten how much retail kills your feet! I love it though! However, because of work and finals and essays I have stopped eating well. I thought I would upload these photos of recent meals to remind me of the fun in cooking and eating well! Threw this outfit on for a day hunting shark teeth with Boyfriend and his mom. I love the subtle mixing patterns and the sweater was definitely necessary with the cool breeze blowing off the water. The three of us spent several hours combing the beach for teeth. Rather, Boyfriend and his mom combed the beach. I wandered and took photos and wandered and glanced around for teeth and took more photos. I didn't find any but Boyfriend gave me one that he found! It lives in my birds nest (found while we were geocaching the other week) on my bookshelf.

I miss my pink hair so much! My paying job for the summer requires me to have a natural hair color so I'm blond for now and, as soon as my hair heals a bit, brown for the foreseeable future. I'm sad that I was only pink for a month. When I've moved on from this job and my hair is as long as it was last summer I hope to go pink again! Or I could just take my friend Katie's suggestion and buy a wig. Any suggestions for wig retailers?

I wore this lovely outfit to an interview for an internship at a museum. I scored the interview and I'd like to think it's because of my awesome style. Haha. Actually, I'd like to think it's because of my conversational skills and sweet resume. I will be interning part time in the costume and textile department of a D.C. museum. I can't wait! I get to spend my summer researching antique dresses and quilts and hopefully putting together an exhibit for next year.

I do love this outfit though. I'll probably be repeating it with different variations over the summer. Ideally I would have paired it with pumps but it was cold and rainy the day of my interview. Also, I love this trench coat. I bought it six years ago on my first trip to Paris. It languished in my closet through high school but I rediscovered it and put it to use last spring and this spring. Hooray for long lost clothing!

My academic career is over--for now. This summer vacation isn't actually a vacation at all, it's the beginning of the end.

Cirque Noir

The fashion show I'm in is themed Cirque Noir. After the opening night show my darling Katie urged me to come home and play dress up with my lovely finger curls! I did several themed photo shoots but since the show is closing tomorrow night I thought I'd post these circus themed ones. Crinoline is so versatile ;).

The show is going really well (I think) but I'll talk more about it when I get pictures. The photographer is fantastic and I hope there are some good shots of me. For posterity ;)!

Last week, Boyfriend and I went shark tooth hunting. We drove two hours (he drove, I slept) to meet his Mom for a day of coming the beach for treasures. It was warm and a little windy, perfect. I like the bleached out quality of these photos but I took some others where the blue of the water (the Potomac River) is crisp. I also took some film photos, which will one day be developed.

Saturday night, I had some friends over for my first "dinner party" in the apartment. It went well despite a burnt pot of rice (I really hate cooking rice on the stove). Following, we rushed into the city for the DC Film Festival. We had the privilege of watching the first movie to ever be produced in Greenland, Nummioq. The movie was fantastic. The story was touching and the actors (most of them starring in their first film) were emotive and believable. The Greenlandic scenery was beautiful. The director was there for a Q&A after the film and it was fun to hear him speak.

Also, apparently Greenland is filled with tremendously attractive men who can do things like catch fish with just their hands. Road trip?

Do you see those shoes? Those shoes are at least five inches with a 2 inch platform and they glitter! If that doesn't say stripper than I don't know what does. No, I have not taken up stripping to supplement my blogging income (I get paid to write that blog->>). These shoes are the heels I have to wear in an upcoming fashion show. Classy.

Moving on, this shirt is thrifted and is pirate-y and wonderful and buttons up the back. These jeans are red and, as always, fabulous. My hair is a hot mess of pink, blond, brown and bobby pins. I can't wait to be brunette again!

I spent Saturday night drinkin' a 40oz and editing some of my favorite photos. I turned these five black and white just to see how they'd hold up. I have to say I like them. The fourth is my favorite but I think the first and third are the strongest technically. The fifth is my favorite photo I've ever taken and while it's has strong contrast I really miss the colours.

It's really gray and cold here. I haven't had the desire to do anything but curl up on my couch, drink coffees, and watch Torchwood. The past couple of days that's exactly what I've been doing. I have also spent a lot of time going through my many photo albums from my time in England. I found these outfit photos that I never got around to posting. Everything except the boots, tights, and hat are from England. Even my hair cut and color was done at the Vidal Sasson on Bond Street,London.

I miss London so much it hurts.

It was the first place I felt confident in who I was as an individual adult. I grew up a lot in those four months. I learned to cook, I had a job I loved, I was interested in learning again. I spent lots of time walking around the city and through its parks. In London, I truly felt like me. Since returning to the United States I've had a lot of good days but lately the weather has been kicking my ass. Why is it so cold and gray in April? How is this fair?

If it's going to be cold, gray, and damp, I might as well be in London.

In London, there are trains every few minutes that speed you down tunnels and take you to exciting new places. There are little alleys to explore and you feel like a character from Shakespeare. The buildings are old and the bricks have history that is palpable. Even the new buildings are designed in ways that excite the imagination. There are large parks in the middle of the city; it's possible to be so far deep into a park that you forget there is a city around you.

I want to be there to forget.

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to have the time to head down to DC and take in the blossoms. A friend and I walked around the tidal basin and shot the beautiful blossoms. One of the good things about hanging out with other photogs is they understand the need to pause and take the same photo over and over--anything for the shot!

It was SO cold, even though it looks like spring. My hands were numb! It was worth it for the photos and the fun afternoon! These are my favorite photos but I may upload some more later.

back to basics

We poor bastards in the D.C. area (and all along the east coast) have been hit with a cold snap. This means a return to layers and layers. Combine miserable weather, a unicorn stampede in your uterus, and exam week and that means back to the basics. For me basics include: tiny dress, big sweater, and whatever tights are clean. What are they to you? Jeans & a tee? A sundress? Nothing at all?

I spent the day downtown at the cherry blossom festival snapping pictures. I'm now spending the evening curled up on the couch with Boyfriend, drinking wine (he's drinking hurricane), and watching a movie. Maybe V for Vendetta. Happy Tuesday :).

Almost two years ago the Boyfriend and I went to VA Beach for a long weekend. I had just purchased the Diana F+ Lomography camera from Urban (lovingly called Lady Di) and I took her along. I just (like yesterday) had the film developed. Unfortunately only two photos came out! I think a lot of that has to do with my inexperience inserting and removing the film. Oops. I'll have to try again some time soon. Boyfriend and I are planning another beach trip for this October; hopefully by then I'll have better lomo-skills!

If you have any advice I'd love to hear it!

Some days are just good! I woke up this morning and made pancakes, covered them in fresh strawberries, and ate them while discussing cultural differences and apocalypse with a darling friend. I then went to the ballet with my mother and was enchanted by Proteges III. I ate dinner with my parents and it was delicious! I'm now editing photos, watching Bones, and drinking tea.

Sundays are wonderful.

I had this dress hanging on my wall for the past month just waiting for my hair to finally be pink. It was supposed to be my debut outfit, however, the baby shower outfit came first. I finally wore this yesterday for a day of studying, exam taking, and wine drinking with Boyfriend. I received a compliment from the sweetest little girl on my dress while studying in everyone's favorite coffee chain. Then, while walking down the hall toward my classroom, a girl said to me in passing, "you look beautiful." I blushed, thanked her, and continued on. Thinking about that interaction just now made me wonder: is there a connection between being true-to-you and attracting positive people.

I've had friends who tease me about my style evolution but these friends were mostly people who I met in my "boring days." The more I dress for me and only me, the more people who come into my life who accept and even appreciate my style choices. The same with being more me. The more positive I am about myself, the more positive and affirming people come into my life. I think the adage "what you put into the world, you get out of it" is true. I plan to put more good in.

I had my first maternity shoot with my friend Katie last week! I think it went really well and I'm happy with a lot of the shots. Katie still has two months until her daughter is due and I anticipate several more shoots--with her husband as well! These are some of my favorite shots. I love how Katie's love of fairy tales came through even though (besides the me bringing the angel wings on a whim) we didn't plan it that way at all. I'll share a few more later this week!

My hair is finally pinkpinkpink! My darling Katie coloured it Friday and it is so nice to have colour again! I was way tired of being blond. Today I went to Katie & Brendon's baby shower and I just had to wear my new (to me) pretty, pink petticoat.

My mom gave me this idea for hanging frames. Newspaper cut outs make it much easier to figure out how you want to arrange your art.

A lot of my frames are still empty. I like how they look though; like they are open to all possibility.

I recently sorted through all my photos from my parents and my trek through Europe. Bath was one of my favorite places I visited while abroad (so favorite that I visited twice!). Looking at these photos reminds me of my love for the architecture and feel of the town. The years have not aged this city. It is just as magical now as when it was a retreat for the wealthy years and years ago.

I wish the photo of my dad was in focus. Oh well.

Once upon a time, there was a little old shoemaker who was having trouble finishing his orders. In the middle of the night elves came and secretly cobbled his shoes. The shoemaker and his wife, unable to let the mystery remain unsolved, spied on the elves. When the elves saw the shoemaker and his wife they fled the little old shop--never to return again. Luckily, once upon another time, a girl stumbled upon a little old shop in Richmond and in there was a pair of those shoes cobbled by the elves. Ecstatic she swooped them up (for a mere eight dollars) and danced off into the sunset!

I dressed up for my mother's birthday and decided the outfit needed a tea cup to complete the look! I used my Grandmother's Wedgewood china, which sits in the cupboard in my kitchen tempting me every time I make a cup of coffee.

This sweetie is Ninja (his parents are Katie and Brendon). He is a fiesty kitty who is a Mama's boy and doesn't like it when you stick your nose in his face. Whenever I visit my pet owning friends I spend more time cuddling the kittens than chatting with them (slight exaggeration)! I so so want a little kitty all of my own but the building I live in has a strict no pet rule. I've been baking a lot this year. Having a full kitchen has opened up a million possibilities that don't really exist when one lives in the dorm room. This is the second cake I've made from scratch (I made the icing too). It is a vanilla cake with sour cream icing! The cake is old-fashioned and a little more dense than modern recipes and the icing is the perfect combination of sweet and sour! I had so much batter that I made a two-story cake and 9 little cupcakes!

If I could I would send a cupcake to everyone of my followers as thanks for all the lovely comments you leave me. Every time I read a comment I smile and I love the feedback you all have given me on outfits, life, and photography! I knew this week was going to be tough when I thought Monday was Thursday! It's been a very bizarre week. I took two exams, turned in two papers, submitted my thesis proposal, and started practice for the fashion show. Today I am going to do some painting (of houses, not art) and then tomorrow I hope to get my apartment straightened up and bake a new cake! Sour cream icing! Wish me luck.

Boyfriend and I decided long ago that we wouldn't give gifts on our anniversary. Instead we take trips. This year we went away to Williamsburg. We went in early January and it turned out to be a fantastic time to go! Tickets were crazy cheap and the place was almost deserted. It was a lot easier to slip into the Colonial mindset when the only people to be seen were in period costume! We spent the day wandering the streets and popping into the shops to learn about colonial crafts. I enjoyed the silver maker and the man who was working with leather (ahh, name?). We also spent some time in the William & Mary Barnes and Noble drinking coffee and warming up. There is something to be said for doing outdoorsy things in the summer. Next year I'm pushing for a trip to the Bahamas ;).

I love this coat. I stalked it for weeks and weeks at Kennedy Holmes' etsy shop. It is the perfect, true red and it reminds me of Paddington Bear! After hinting at it for Christmas I eventually just bought it for myself (with the help of Boyfriend as I was out of the country). I wear it almost every day and it is so lovely! Recently I've been very attracted to red and I believe it all started with this coat!

Most of the pink has faded from my hair. I'm all blond now and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. I need to order more hair color so we can keep working. My photography adventure took me to the National Mall. I spent a few hours walking back and forth between the Washington Monument and the Capital taking photos of the wonderful snow.

I love the light through the trees and the odd reflection in this instillation at the mini-sculpture garden.

I was there for long enough to see the sunset, which was beautiful! I love a good sunset.

The morning after the storm was beautiful! The whole world was white and crisp and outside it was a mild 48 degrees. My wonderful Boyfriend picked me up from my apartment and took my on a lunch date and then to Barnes & Noble for some magazine readin' and coffee drinkin'.

He is a zombie (for real, he'd just work like 11 hours and was dying for sleep when he took me out. Poor baby).

We ate at Earl's in Clarendon. We love their sandwiches!

After lunch and coffee, Boyfriend went home to sleep and I set off on a photo adventure!

Last week, Arlington was hit with an awesome snow storm that came with its very own thunder and lightening! Apparently that is unusual because my facebook feed was filled with "thundersnow" statuses. I like the term a lot.

I spent the storm laying low in my apartment, drinking wine, and taking photos off my balcony. The first photo was taken around 6 pm. It was so foggy that I could barely make out the highway that runs 14 stories below my little home. Luckily my neighbors turned their fairy lights on so I could enjoy the snow with some lighting! I adore fairy lights. I want to hang some up in my room but I have no idea where to buy them when it's not Christmas. Does anyone know?

This outfit came together backwards and upside down. First the stockings and thigh highs. Then I spent a good 20 minutes searching for a dress that would show a little bit of the stockings, have an interesting contrasting pattern, and not look, in the leas,t skanky. I ended up with this floofy skirt with tulle underneath and the high-waisted belt. I feel that anything that is high-waisted, poofy, and polka-dotted counteracts the skank-factor of fishnets and thigh highs. Fun fact: This outfit was not warm enough for 20 degree weather. Even topped with a leather jacketand wool coat. The wind found its way through each and every fishnet hole.

Worn to: happy hour at a sushi place where I paid 7$ for a green cocktail. Someone remind me why I go out for drinks?
